Girls Winmau World Masters 2009
Well its only about 6 weeks since Zoe returned from Holland, as Europe Cup Youth Champion in singles & Doubles and the gold medal for overall girls Champions of Europe with Lauren Hitchens, and it has been non stop for her since. With competitions every weekend and putting as much practice in as possible to prepare for the biggest title of her short but amazing career so far.
Zoe arrived in Bridlington on Thursday afternoon, happy in her mind that she was fully prepared for the Tournament ahead. Friday morning Zoe was up at 7am and off to the venue at 8am to have an hour or two practice before her first round match against Germany’s Michelle Wagner.
After a nervy first leg Zoe soon found her rhythm and before long she was 3-0 up and throwing for 86 after 12 darts, leaving 40, Zoe hit tops with 1 dart to win 4-0 and go though to the next round.
The second round Zoe was up against a young but very talented Cyrielle Staquet from France. Zoe started the game the way she finished the last match going out in 18 and 19 darts to go 2-0 up. The third leg was another good leg from Zoe with scores of 140,140,60,41 but with replies of 100,100,60,100 from Cyrielle, Zoe still had work to do, Zoe needed 120 to close the leg hit 60,20 and just missed tops for the leg. Cyrielle hit 41 to leave 100, but Zoe took out tops with 1 dart to go 3-0 up and 1 leg away from the next round. Cyrielle played well again in the next leg with scores of 3x100+ and three darts at 36 to win the leg, but Zoe had the answers with scores of 180 and 2 x 100+ and hit double 10 to win the match 4-0.
At the last 8 stage of the competition Zoe was up against Angharad Birch of Wales. With Zoe probably playing the some of her best darts that I have seen so far, she made light work of it winning again 4-0 and was going into the semi final.
With only one game separating Zoe and a place in the final all was to play for, and her next opponent would be England’s Kristy Hutchinson. This looked as if it was going to be a very tough game for Zoe as Kristy had played well all day beating Finland’s Aliisa Koskiviirta 4-1 ( Europe Cup Singles runner up) then England’s Elisha Evens 4-3 finally beating the Netherlands number 1 Lynn Poolen 4-1 in the last 8.
The match didn’t disappoint with some great darts from both players, Zoe leaving 120 after12 darts missing tops, but then took two darts to finish 40 to win the first in 17 darts. Zoë then took the second leg in 19 darts, in the third leg it was only the second leg of the day were Zoe saw her opponent have a shot at a double, but Kristy was unable to finish the leg and Zoe took the third leg in 22 darts to take a 3-0 lead. With the finishing line getting closer Zoe went off like a train, with scores of 140,81,100,60,100 missing a 120 out for the third time of the day and leaving 20, on her return to the board Zoe stood back for a few seconds to compose herself with 3 darts in her hand to hit double 10, the first dart clipped the outside wire but there was no mistake with the second it went straight in the middle of double to have a final leg of 17 darts, and book her place in the Winmau World Masters Final on Sunday afternoon.
